Ice-Associated Amphipods in a Pan-Arctic Scenario of Declining Sea Ice

چکیده
Sea-ice macrofauna includes ice amphipods and benthic amphipods, as well mysids. Amphipods are important components of the sympagic food web, which is fuelled by production algae. Data on diversity sea-ice biota have been collected a part scientific expeditions over decades, here we present pan-Arctic analysis data ice-associated mysids assimilated 35 years (1977–2012). The composition species differed among 13 locations around Arctic, with main differences between basins shelves also communities in drift landfast sea ice. has dramatically reduced extent thickness during recorded period, resulted abundance from 1980’s to 2010’s. decline mainly involved Gammarus wilkitzkii coinciding disappearance much multiyear ice, an habitat for this long-lived species. Benthic were most diverse, showed time-span. They had higher closer land where they associated However, occurred Central Arctic Ocean, likely related origin shallow water subsequent transport transpolar drift. Recent sampling waters east north Svalbard found continued presence Apherusa glacialis , but almost no G. . Monitoring standardized methods needed detect further changes community reductions cover type.

Retention of ice-associated amphipods: possible consequences for an ice-free Arctic Ocean
Recent studies predict that the Arctic Ocean will have ice-free summers within the next 30 years. This poses a significant challenge for the marine organisms associated with the Arctic sea ice, such as marine mammals and, not least, the ice-associated crustaceans generally considered to spend their entire life on the underside of the Arctic sea ice. Based upon unique samples collected within th...

Arctic sea ice provides microhabitats for biota that inhabit the liquid-filled network of brine channels and the ice-water interface. We used meta-analysis of 23 published and unpublished datasets comprising 721 ice cores to synthesize the variability in composition and abundance of sea ice meiofauna at spatial scales ranging from within a single ice core to pan-Arctic and seasonal scales. Two-...

Climate change is a pressing and present issue which has come to be at the forefront in the last few decades. As such, understanding climate change is of utmost importance. In addition to environmental impact, these changes will have social and economic ramifications as these changes will affect the way in which we utilize land and sea resources in the future. The minimum annual arctic sea ice ...
متن کاملLoss of sea ice in the Arctic.
The Arctic sea ice cover is in decline. The areal extent of the ice cover has been decreasing for the past few decades at an accelerating rate. Evidence also points to a decrease in sea ice thickness and a reduction in the amount of thicker perennial sea ice. A general global warming trend has made the ice cover more vulnerable to natural fluctuations in atmospheric and oceanic forcing. The obs...
